You can’t think of Ireland without picturing rolling green hills, cobblestone streets, and of course, St. Patrick’s Day. After 13 years of Catholic schools, I get especially excited about March 17. It was one of only three days we didn’t have to wear uniforms! St. Paddy’s Day is one of my favorite holidays and the perfect time to reflect on my travels in Ireland. So put some green food coloring in those pancakes, enjoy some corned beef, and start planning your solo travel itinerary to Ireland with these attractions in mind!
The Ring of Kerry
Ireland is home to some stunning natural landscapes—or “40 shades of green,” as they say. If you want to experience the majesty of nature, rent a car and drive around the Ring of Kerry. This scenic, circular drive takes you past views of small villages, seaside landscapes, and medieval ruins. I went with a guided tour, but looking back, I think renting a car is the way to go!
The Blarney Stone
Are you a smooth talker? Legend has it that kissing the Blarney Stone near Cork will give you “the gift of gab,” or a skill for flattery. I kissed it back in 2011, and I can attest that I’ve been yakking ever since! Be sure to add this iconic site to your solo trip to Ireland.
Cliffs of Moher
The Cliffs of Moher are a classic on any list of Ireland destinations. Nevertheless, you really need to check out this tourist spot! They’re one of the island’s most visited spots, and the landscape is perfect for a photo op.
Dublin’s Temple Bar
As an over 60 traveler, I love taking in natural beauty. But in addition to nature, Ireland is also a great place to get out on the town. The Temple Bar area in Dublin is a lively district filled with restaurants, boutiques, live music, and nightlife. Visiting is an excellent way to try local cuisine and let loose!
Kylemore Abbey
Are you hoping to get a glimpse of the sophistication and grandeur of Ireland’s religious history? Take a tour of the stunning Kylemore Abbey. This white stone monastery overlooks the water against a beautiful green-mountain backdrop.
The Guinness Storehouse
Ireland is famous for beer, and you simply can’t visit this beautiful country without stopping by the Guinness Storehouse. You can book tickets for a tour and get the full brewery experience! Even if you’re not a beer drinker, I still suggest making time for a visit.
Killarney
A small town feel, gorgeous landscapes, and modern conveniences all in one? What else can you ask for? Killarney makes an excellent stop on any trip to Ireland. Be sure to check the historic castles, national park, and delicious food! Hop on a carriage ride through the beautiful landscape. I highly recommend a guided tour of the city.
Perfect for the Over 60 Traveler
If you’re hoping to plan a vacation in the near future, you can’t go wrong with Ireland! Native English speakers won’t have to worry much about language barriers (though an Irish accent is sometimes tough to understand), and public transport is quite accessible. St. Patrick’s Day is the perfect time to start planning your adventure. Check out some highlights from my time in Ireland and other recent trips on Instagram @travelingblackwidow!
