9 Ideas for Over 60 Travel Without a Passport

Getting a passport costs both time and money, and not everyone has the resources to dedicate to their ticket to international travel. And that’s okay! We all have different priorities, Whether that’s caring for a family or finishing school. Now, I’ve seen hundreds of places throughout my years as a solo, over 60 traveler, and many of those places didn’t require a passport stamp. If you’re in the United States and have the travel bug, there are so many destinations that are well worth the trip. Here are nine amazing locales to visit—no passport needed!

1. Bask on Beaches in the U.S. Virgin Islands

Nestled in the heart of the Caribbean, the US Virgin Islands is a beacon for travelers from all over the world. I love a beach day as much as anyone, and you’ll find no shortage of stunning beaches throughout the islands. If you have some extra time, consider visiting the national park on St. John!

2. See the Northern Lights in North Dakota

The Aurora Borealis is one of the most beautiful natural wonders of our world. It’s often associated with the far north like Iceland, but you can see them from the United States! Book a few days in Jamestown, North Dakota and see if you can catch this incredible marvel. Just in case the Northern Lights don’t appear, be sure to plan activities like snowboarding, cross-country skiing, or just enjoying downtown Jamestown.

3. Go Whale Watching in Alaska

Venture even further into the chilly north with a trip to Alaska! Whale-watching in this massive state is perfect for over 60 traveler. You get the tranquility of nature and the once-in-a-lifetime experience of seeing some of the world’s most majestic animals. Try scheduling your trip between May and September to get the best photo op and a bit of warmth.

Welcome to your Alaska vacation!

4. Soak Up the Sun in Tampa Bay

Cold weather isn’t for everyone—why not get some sun in beautiful Central Florida? Tampa Bay is home to some of the most gorgeous beaches in the country, and there’s plenty to do outside of working on your tan. Try one of the many dining experiences and adorable boutiques that dot the city.. If your itinerary allows, I recommend making a stop at Amelia Island in the northern part of the state, too.

5. Conquer the Wild West in Yellowstone National Park

I’m a firm believer that everyone in the US should visit our marvelous national parks! Yellowstone simply cannot be missed, and it works perfectly for a first-timer in the American West. Be sure to see the staples, like the Old Faithful geyser, and you’ll likely get a glimpse of majestic wildlife in the process.

Every Boomer traveler should see the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone

6. Enjoy Hawaii’s Tropical Paradise

Hawaii is without a doubt one of the best solo travel destinations across the board, but it’s especially friendly to boomer travel. The slower pace of life and slew of all-ages activities will have you never wanting to leave. In addition to taking in fantastic island views, find times to try surfing, snorkeling, or hiking the Hawaiian volcanoes.

Hawaii is truly a tropical paradise

7. Deep Dive into History in Washington, DC

Everyone should visit our nation’s capital at some point if they’re able! Be sure to see landmarks like the Capitol Building, Washington Monument, and Lincoln Memorial. But DC isn’t just for history buffs—there’s a diverse culinary scene and a vibrant arts community, too. The cherry blossoms encircling the Tidal Basin make a spring visit a special treat.

8. Take in the Vibe in Sedona

Do you love the vibe of a small town? Sedona is unlike any you’ve visited before. Known for desert scenery and energy vortexes, Sedona is a haven for southwestern art. The charming Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village features local art and upscale boutiques alike. At night, the landscape transforms into a magical oasis, away from the daily grind and city lights. September to April are quite comfy. If you start missing city life, the hustle and bustle of Phoenix is only about two hours away by car.

The Phoenix art scene is so much fun!

9. Experience History in Williamsburg

Williamsburg, Virginia is the perfect solo travel destination for history buffs and nature lovers alike. Williamsburg proper has plenty of shops and restaurants, while Colonial Williamsburg transports you back to a time before the American Revolution. The site has come a long way in its Black representation and offers a powerful look into Black history.

Can’t get enough of Colonial Williamsburg!
