Planning for summer travel is sometimes stressful, but always exciting. Every once in a while, it makes sense to go to a more low-key destination where you can prioritize relaxing and seeing the sights rather than navigating layovers and exchanging currency. This summer, I had the privilege of visiting gorgeous Grand Rapids, Michigan, sponsored by the folks at Experience Grand Rapids. If this mid-sized city isn’t already on your bucket list, be sure to pencil it in! It offers quaint scenery, a bustling arts and culture scene, and more yummy food than you could ever try in just one weekend. Grand Rapids is perfect for over 60 travel, but I recommend this destination to anyone—families, solo travelers, and girls’ trips. Grand Rapids makes an excellent stop on any summer road trip!
Grandeur in Grand Rapids
Before getting down to business, I checked into my stunning hotel—the Amway Grand Plaza. This has to be one of the best places to go in Michigan if you’re looking for a taste of luxury without braving the big city. It’s truly grand, with floor-to-ceiling windows in the bedrooms, incredible restaurants, and a lobby that feels straight out of the Regency Era. If it’s your thing, you can even listen to a live jazz band in the lounge! After a long day of sightseeing, I recommend riding the elevator up to the 27th floor for some Spanish cuisine at MDRD.
Take on the Arts & Culture Scene
Museums are always on my to-do list, especially since I visited historic Colonial Williamsburg. And Grand Rapids’ Public Museum certainly did not disappoint! The museum has lots of can’t miss attractions—a nearly 100-year-old carousel (that you can still ride!), a replica Terracotta Warrior, and even an ice cream shop from the early 1900s.
If you’re really interested in museums, make a stop at the Gerald Ford Presidential Museum. While it wasn’t on my itinerary, I was so glad I went! I don’t necessarily align with Ford’s views, but my visit gave me a new perspective on his presidency. The museum reveals that Ford didn’t aspire to be president, but took up the mantle when it was given to him and led the country through a divisive time. I can’t help but be reminded of how God always has a grander purpose for us in mind!
Once you’re finished at local museums, it’s time to get outdoors at the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park. There were some really incredible art pieces on display, everything from The American Horse (a towering 24-foot sculpture) to a Buddha nestled beside a tree. And I was sure to see some of Mother Nature’s art as well, including a Japanese garden (considered one of the biggest Japanese gardens outside of Japan) and breathtaking waterfalls around every corner. Turns out, you can get a little slice of an island paradise right here in Michigan!
To wrap up my first full day in town, I got to sit back and relax on the lawn with some live music at the amphitheater. I can’t even remember the last time I was at an outdoor concert, but I really loved seeing Tegan and Sara’s set up close. That’s what makes travel so magical—you find yourself trying out things!
Fresh As a Flower at Aroma Labs
Finding things to do as a solo traveler can be difficult, but Grand Rapids has just the thing whether you’re by yourself or on a mother daughter trip. I had such a unique experience at Aroma Labs downtown, and I can’t recommend it enough! After all, where else can you craft your very own fragrance? This is a popular stop for engaged couples, girls’ nights, and bachelorette parties, but everyone is welcome. The friendly staff walks you through the process of combining fragrances and creating your very own signature scent. There’s no cost to make your fragrance, only to purchase the finished product!
Is a Beach Day in Your Future?
While Grand Rapids isn’t a beach town in itself, you can always add some fun in the sun to your weekend. The city is a reasonable drive to quaint beach towns along the Lake Michigan coast. If you’re looking to expand your Michigan holiday, take the 40-minute trip up to one of these adorable lakeside towns.
Celebrate Civil Rights
I was so lucky that my Grand Rapids visit coincided with Juneteenth celebrations. The city really does a great job of commemorating the holiday. This year’s event was held at Rosa Parks Circle and celebrates Black art, entertainment, and culture. I got there just in time for the breakdancing finals! I love destinations that honor the positivity and liveliness of Black culture.
It was a busy weekend in Grand Rapids. Not only was it Juneteenth, but the Pride Festival was also in full swing. This celebration is much more than just your average parade. Downtown was absolutely teeming with positivity, and there was so much love in the air. I even got some love for my outfit while recording an Instagram story!
So Many Delicious Restaurants in Grand Rapids
The food is another aspect of Grand Rapids that puts it among the top places to travel in MIchigan. And trust me, my itinerary was overflowing with exceptional restaurant options. Here’s where I got to eat over my weekend visit:
- MDRD—Spain might be an overnight flight away from Grand Rapids, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get a taste of Madrid! MDRD’s menu lists some delicious Spanish dishes, and guests get to have their meals while gazing through extravagant floor-to-ceiling windows.
- Morning Belle—You seldom see boomer travel recommendations that don’t include a brunch stop! Morning Belle is a cute little place that serves indulgent brunch options and zingy cocktails.
- Butcher’s Union—Butcher’s Union is a paradise for whiskey lovers! If you’re in the mood for steak and a page full of whiskey options, this is the place for you.
- Tupelo Honey Southern Kitchen and Bar—You can always count on Southern cooking! This eatery had some of the most incredible sides (think collards, bacon, and crispy brussel sprouts). I indulged in the fried chicken and mac and cheese!
- Social Misfits—Here’s another place to sample some mac and cheese! This restaurant has really perfected the mac and cheese waffle and has a unique atmosphere to boot.
The Perfect Endpoint for a Summer Road Trip
You don’t need to jet off to Paris or Cinque Terre for some summer fun! You can always find a USA travel destination that speaks to you. Michigan has the perfect blend of city life and untouched nature, and after my weekend in Grand Rapids, I’d say it’s among the best places to visit in Michigan. There’s public art dotting the city, as well as plenty of amazing eateries and attractions. So, what are you waiting for? Start planning that summer road trip and make sure you stop in beautiful Grand Rapids.
