Jungfraujoch: Stunning Views from the Top of Europe

When you travel often, you meet all kinds of people—everyone from boomer travelers who prefer a relaxing day at the beach to young couples who want to see all the famous tourist sites. Oftentimes, you find destinations that truly have something for everyone: art, history, recreation, film, and so much more. Jungfraujoch, a lesser-known tourist destination in Switzerland, fits this description perfectly. Nestled in the beautiful alps, this peak is known as the Top of Europe and reaches 3,454 meters high. I was fortunate enough to visit as a part of my Collette trip, “Peaks of Europe: The Alps to the Dolomites,” and I’m so excited to share this place with others! Here’s what you should know before packing up for Jungfraujoch.

Things to Do at Jungfraujoch

First, let’s tackle the most important part of any trip: what to do. Explore these attractions once you reach the top of Jungfraujoch:

Ice Palace

The Ice Palace is the crown jewel of Jungfraujoch. This stunning attraction first came into being in the 1930s when mountain guides carved out hallways with picks and saws. In the present day, the whimsical palace is home to exceptional works of art. You won’t believe what talented folks can make out of something as mundane as ice!

Lindt Swiss Chocolate Heaven

Once you’ve found your way to this tall peak, it’s time for a treat! Luckily, you’re closeby the highest Lindt chocolate shop in the world. Sample delicious chocolates while you check out the view, or get some candy-making tips from a virtual chocolatier!

Alpine Sensation

Jungfraujoch has a fascinating history, and you can get a glimpse into the past via Alpine Sensation! This multimedia experience transports visitors back 100 years to learn more about the very miners that opened the mountain up to the growing rail system. At the end of the presentation, don’t forget the photo op in front of the giant snow globe!

Sphinx Terrace

See all that this UNESCO World Heritage Site has to offer from Sphinx Terrace. This viewpoint gives you a direct look at the longest glacier in the Alps. And you can travel to the observation deck in luxury—be sure to take the ultra-fast lift!

Jungfrau Panorama

When you’re up in the heights of Europe, clouds can sweep in and obstruct your view of the landscape. But no matter—the Jungfrau Panorama provides you with a 360-degree view of the mountain that you wouldn’t be able to see beyond the clouds.

Snow Fun Park

The beach isn’t for everyone! If you would prefer winter all year round, try out the Snow Fun Park. This locale is home to several winter activities, including skiing, snowboarding, sledding, and ziplining. Any of these would be great for solo travelers too!

Hiking

Hiking is a very popular pastime in the area, and Jungfraujoch is near lots of trails and natural wonders. Wander along the Eiger Trail, bask in the beauty of Lake Bachalpsee, or take a high-altitude hike toward Schynige Platte. Bear in mind that each hike has its own length and level of difficulty!

When Is the Best Time to Visit Jungfraujoch?

You can visit Jungfraujoch 365 days a year, weather permitting. No matter when you decide to visit, you’ll be met with a winter wonderland fit for the art and adventure lover in all of us. Remember, the average temperature is only about 18 degrees Fahrenheit, so you’ll want to pack plenty of layers!

How Much Do Tickets Cost?

Ticket prices vary depending on where you’re journeying from. If you’re taking the train from Grindelwald Terminal, tickets start at 107 Swiss Francs, or $120 in American currency. However, there are several options if you’re coming from Interlaken or Lauterbrunnen. Once you get to Jungfraujoch, be sure to save some cash for refreshments at the self-service restaurant or a la carte cafe!

Scale the Swiss Peaks at Jungfraujoch

Whether you’re searching for your next mother daughter travel destination or you’re looking to check Switzerland off your to-visit list, Jungfraujoch makes an excellent stop. I loved my time there on my Collette trip, and I’m so happy more people are seeing this gorgeous tourist site. I saw lots of young Instagrammers at the Top of Europe, and it seems the place is becoming increasingly popular. It’s clear that Switzerland is taking stock of its potential as a tourist site. In a few years, I anticipate Jungfraujoch being an iconic stop just like the Eiffel Tower and Statue of Liberty. You heard it here first!
