Reasons to Include a United Nations Visit on Your Next NYC Trip

New York City is on nearly everyone’s travel bucket list–and for lots of good reasons. The city is a cultural hub, from mouth-watering food to a thriving arts scene. But as you plan your NYC trip, be sure to see some of the more understated sights, too. One of my lovely Instagram followers, Anna Helena, DM’d me, offering to take me on a personal tour of the United Nations building where she worked. It was certainly an experience to remember! Here are my tips for scheduling your very own visit to the UN.

A Powerful Solo Travel Experience

Admittedly, my trip to the UN wasn’t technically solo travel (I visited with my niece), but it’s a must-see for anyone building a solo itinerary to NYC. For decades I’d totally taken the United Nations for granted, but after seeing it in person, I have a new appreciation for the organization. Established in 1945, it was created post-World War II to ensure there would never be another world war. Today, there are 193 member countries. It was so powerful to visit an organization vested in international peace. According to its charter, the UN can take action on these issues:

  • Maintaining international peace and security
  • Protecting human rights
  • Delivering humanitarian aid
  • Promoting sustainable development
  • Upholding international law

What to See at the United Nations

The United Nations is more than just an office building in New York City. It’s full of attractions perfect for over 60 travel, students, couples and family trips. Even if you don’t have an insider tour of the grounds like I did, you can still catch the following sights:

  • Gardens—I was so excited to sneak a peek at the gardens. They must be exquisite in the spring and summer when the cherry blossoms and rose bushes donated by countries around the world are in bloom.
  • Multimedia Exhibits—The UN offers an insightful look into the current state of human rights. Be sure to pencil time to check out photo and multimedia exhibits covering climate action, women’s rights, peace, and sustainable development. Exhibits are free and open to the public!
  • Public Tours—After my tour with Anna Helena, I opted for the public guided tour as well. The standard package lasts an hour and covers the history and work of the United Nations. You’ll even get to step into the General Assembly Hall!

Keep Up with Me on Instagram

I am so happy Anna Helena reached out and offered me the chance to see the United Nations. It was so reassuring and encouraging to know that there’s an international organization actively working to resolve the world’s problems that we see nightly on the news. I can’t believe I wasn’t already aware of these efforts! I feel so enlightened about what’s truly happening to make our world a better place. I’m so thankful for an Instagram friend who understands just how much I love learning. Whenever you find yourself in New York, please spend some time visiting the United Nations. Take the solo travel route, or visit with family, and then send your experiences to me, @travelingblackwidow, on Instagram!
