Morocco is among the crown jewels of North Africa. Just south of Spain, this country has no shortage of incredible architecture, sweeping desert landscapes, and exciting adventures. In fact, Morocco has begun to rival Egypt for the most-visited country in Africa. I had the pleasure of visiting pre-pandemic in 2019, and I can definitely see why it’s gained so much popularity. Here are some of my recommendations for over-60 travelers seeing Morocco for the first time.
Tour the Capital City of Rabat
When visiting a new country, going to the capital is a no-brainer! Rabat is no exception—this city definitely ranks near the top of my must-see list. Historical landmarks and architectural wonders can be found all around the city. My tour took us past some of the most famous stops, including the Royal Palace, Hassan Tower, and Kasbah of the Udayas. Don’t miss this chance to view some truly stunning pieces of history!
Explore Majestic Marrakesh
Marrakesh can be an overwhelming city—but in the best way! In addition to markets selling food, spices, and garments, there are countless attractions. You’d need several days in the city to see them all, but be sure to visit some of these stand-out landmarks:
- Jardin Majorelle—This stunning botanical garden is a must-see! It was designed by a painter and was once owned by illustrious fashion designer Yves Saint-Laurent.
- Bahia Palace—The Bahia Palace is a tourist hotspot that you shouldn’t skip! The architecture and grounds are gorgeous and provide a glimpse into the city’s history.
- Jemaa el-Fnaa Square—Take a stroll through the Djemaa el-Fna in the evening! This square is bustling with performers, food stalls, and more.
Wander Through the Medina of Fez
The ancient city of Fez is home to one of the world’s largest car-free urban areas, the medina. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a maze of narrow streets, bustling souks, artisan workshops, and fragrant spice markets. While this city is incredible, be warned that it’s also very confusing if you’re not a local. Consider a guided tour to ensure you don’t get lost in twisting and turning streets! I loved hitting up an argan oil shop and a rug gallery and grabbing a photo with a rather dashing gentleman—see my Instagram post for the details!
Search for Photo Ops in the Sahara Desert
My trip to Morocco took me out of my comfort zone, especially when it came time to trek into the Sahara Desert on camelback. I was so worried I would get bucked off, or the camel would take me too deep into the desert. Fortunately, I didn’t chicken out and got to experience one of the most recognizable wonders of the natural world. It was a great reminder that sometimes to do new things, you have to do it afraid. Of course, my fear didn’t stop me from snapping some unforgettable photos!
Visit the Blue City of Chefchaouen
If the wide-open desert isn’t your speed, try Morocco’s famous blue city! The small town of Chefchaouen is known around the world for its striking blue-washed buildings and picturesque scenery. You’ll find all kinds of handicrafts, restaurants, and incredible views as you wander through town.
Check Out the Maze-Like Streets of Essaouira
If you enjoyed the medina and winding streets of Fez, you can’t miss Essaouira! I absolutely loved wandering through the maze-like streets and catching glimpses of the town’s handcrafted silver jewelry. If you have at least a full day in Essaouira, be sure to stop at its famous fish market and attend a Gnawa performance!
Experience Movie Magic at Ouarzazate
Have you ever wanted to visit a movie set? You can in the desert town of Ouarzazate. This place has been used as a filming location for some super famous projects—ever heard of a little show called Game of Thrones? Just a few hours in town and you’ll feel like you’ve entered a fantasy world!
See Muslim Architecture in Casablanca
If you love beautiful architecture and intricate artworks, you simply have to visit Casablanca! The Hassan II Mosque is the second largest functioning mosque in Africa, and its white marble exterior is truly beautiful against the bright blue sky. If you have extra time in your itinerary, squeeze in a stop to Mohammed V Square and the Habous district.
Experience the Magic of Morocco This Year
If you’re still planning this year’s trips, don’t leave out a trip to Morocco! This destination makes the perfect vacation in itself, but you could also add it on to a trip to Spain. Whatever draws you to this country, be it Saharan adventures or intricate architecture, you’re sure to have a remarkable time! Check out more solo travel vacation ideas on my Instagram.
