Fly to Paradise: May in Beautiful Fiji

Over the years, I’ve seen my fair share of stunning destinations. In my years of over 60 travel, I’ve heard countless people sing the praises of Fiji as one of the most beautiful island locations in the world. It’s a hard reputation to live up to, but I have to say the island is everything you expect and more. Not only are there world-class beaches and resorts, but there’s also a wealth of culture and incredibly kind and hard-working people. Maybe my vacation to Fiji will inspire you to find your own slice of paradise this summer.

Spend Your Days Relaxing on the Beach

First on any good Fiji itinerary? Some beach time! Whether you’re going alone or with a guided tour, don’t miss out on the crystal waters and sea breeze. I had my fair share of relaxing on the beach, and I can completely understand how someone could lose track of time and spend days on end chilling out by the ocean!

Add Water Activities to Your Fiji Travel Package

You simply can’t take an island vacation without getting out on the water. Perhaps you’re content with lounging on the beach and taking a dip in the ocean, but more adventurous sorts may want to take the opportunity to go snorkeling or island hopping (Fiji is actually made up of 330 islands!). Lots of solo travelers also enjoy passing the time fishing in the clear blue waters. No matter how you choose to spend your time in Fiji, the water is never too far away!

Don’t Miss the Traditional Fijian Kava Ceremony

Fiji might be a small island nation with a population of only 925,000, but the culture is as rich and vibrant as you’d see in the streets of Colombia or during the Mardi Gras festivities. In Fiji, I had the pleasure of attending part of a kava ceremony. Kava is the national drink of Fiji made from a crushed root and water. It can leave you feeling a little drunk, but also calm and relaxed. While kava wasn’t my cup of tea, I strongly recommend being a part of this rich cultural tradition.

Try Staple Fish Dishes at Nadina Restaurant

There are so many places to visit in Fiji, it’s easy to work up an appetite. After a long day of sightseeing or a relaxing day at the beach, be sure to fill your stomach with traditional Fijian cuisine. I dined twice at Nadina Authentic Fijian Restaurant and had the chance to try two delicious fish dishes. To be honest, fish isn’t usually one of my favorite foods, but the Fijians do it right. Adding coconut milk really sold the dishes for me!

Other Ideas for Your Fiji Vacation

There’s no shortage of cultural activities to enjoy during your Fiji vacation! In addition to the kava ceremony, take any opportunity to see a cultural dinner show. These events showcase native dances and invite lots of audience participation. This is also a once-in-a-lifetime chance to enjoy native cuisine, like pig roasted in the ground. If you have a free day on your itinerary, you might also want to take the Fiji Culture Day Tour. This tour gives you a little taste of many sights and experiences. Guides will take you all over the island and introduce you to basket weaving, Fijian cooking, and ancient pottery treasures. Much of the island culture is influenced by India, as more than a third of the Fijian population claim Indian descent. These Indian people were originally brought to the island in the late 1800s as indentured servants, and many elected to stay after “earning” their freedom.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a trip to an island paradise without checking out nature! Fiji is obviously stunning, no matter where you stay in the archipelago. During your trip, you may want to go on a hike to find magical waterfalls or see the mud pools with healing properties. Hop on a Bula Bus and immerse yourself in nature!

Add These Stops Before or After Fiji

Fiji is quite isolated compared to most of the other places I’ve visited. Unlike Athens or Cinque Terre, Fiji is an hours-long flight from any major city. With this in mind, I recommend adding a few more stops to your trip. Consider seeing other parts of Oceania, particularly New Zealand or Australia. These countries are home to beautiful wildlife, exceptional views, and plenty of cultural attractions. They make an exciting (and closer) jumping-off point for traveling to Fiji.

Is the Beach Calling Your Name This Summer?

Fiji isn’t known as the premier island paradise for nothing! You simply can’t beat the ocean views and the welcoming atmosphere. Of everywhere I’ve been in the world, Fijian people rank as some of the friendliest I’ve met. Everyone I encountered treated me with such kindness. I never saw an attitude or teensiest bit of poor work ethic. They were truly the type of people you want as your family, friends, employees, and volunteers. So next time you’re planning international travel or a mother daughter trip, be sure to pencil in some time for this slice of paradise.
