The Over-60 Traveler’s Guide to Budapest

Budapest. This enchanting city is one of my favorites for over-60 travelers in Eastern Europe! It’s sometimes called the Paris of the East, and for good reason. With stunning architecture and remarkable cultural sites, the comparison to Paris is certainly earned. However, this opulent capital of Hungary is much more affordable and safe than the more-traveled city. Definitely add Budapest to your solo travel bucket list! Here’s my guide to the city.

Visit Historic Landmarks

Budapest is home to some incredible historic landmarks. The area has been settled for thousands of years, so it’s no wonder that history can be seen throughout the city. Here are some of landmarks you simply have to visit:

  • Buda Castle—Explore the historical Buda Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, perched on Castle Hill. The panoramic views of the city are incredible! Next, visit the Hungarian National Gallery and Budapest History Museum within the castle complex.
  • Chain Bridge—Take a stroll across the iconic Chain Bridge, which connects Buda and Pest across the Danube River. The bridge is absolutely stunning, and you’ll even get a glimpse of the beautiful Budapest skyline!

Admire Stunning Architecture

If you love admiring architecture, Budapest will be right up your alley! Try these specific stops or just wander through the city streets and see what you find:

  • Parliament Building—The majestic Hungarian Parliament Building is one of the largest (and most beautiful) parliamentary buildings in the world. Take a guided tour to discover its stunning interior filled with gold finishes and intricate craftsmanship.
  • Fisherman’s Bastion–Fisherman’s Bastion is straight out of a fairy tale! Climb up for panoramic views of the Danube River and the cityscape, or simply gaze at its towers and medieval designs from street level.
  • Heroes’ Square—Heroes’ Square should be next on your itinerary. This vast square features statues of Hungarian leaders and the iconic Millennium Monument. I highly recommend if you’re particularly interested in Hungary’s history!

Relax in the Thermal Baths

Just a stone’s throw from Heroes’ Square lies the Széchenyi Thermal Bath. This grandiose spa with outdoor pools is nothing short of luxurious! Be sure to pencil in some time for spa treatments and consider crossing the street to visit the local zoo. This place is perfect for solo travelers and couples alike!

Sample Hungarian Cuisine

Hungarian cuisine is known for hearty, rich flavors, and that’s a pro for a meat-and-potatoes girl like me! Goulash (stewed beef and vegetables with paprika) is Hungary’s staple dish, but don’t forget to sample their wines, too! You have seemingly endless options for food in Budapest, but if you want to take it from me, I recommend the New York Cafe for some seriously incredible scenery. Clearly the most beautiful restaurant in Budapest. Even the McDonalds near the main train station is dazzling.

Enjoy Music and Nightlife

Last but not least, don’t forget to experience Budapest’s nightlife if that’s your thing! You have plenty of chances to be out and about with the locals. Here are two suggestions for entertainment:

  • Opera House—Attend a performance at the Hungarian State Opera House, known for its stunning Neo-Renaissance architecture and world-class productions. Be sure to check the schedule—who knows, maybe your stay will coincide with your favorite play or ballet!
  • Ruin Bars—Experience Budapest’s unique nightlife scene by visiting its famous ruin bars. These eclectic bars are housed in abandoned buildings and courtyards. I hear the  atmosphere, live music, and creative décor can’t be beat!

Make Budapest Your Summer Vacation Destination

Budapest is a city that seamlessly blends history with modernity, and solo travelers are sure to come away with a memorable experience. There’s music all over town, colorful trolleys, and plenty of cultural stops to fill your itinerary. Travel icon television’s Samantha Brown called Budapest intriguing, and I’d have to agree! You just can’t match the exuberant energy and vibrant culture.

So, gear up for a trip to Eastern Europe this summer with a nice long stop in Budapest!
