Every solo trip is a chance to learn something new about yourself and another culture. But there was something extra special about my solo travels in Africa. As a Black woman, I love experiencing the motherland of my ancestors. Once, I even had a woman in Namibia suggest we could be distant cousins! I was thrilled at her knowledge of our history and possibly kinship. If you’re hoping to see sub-Saharan Africa one day, here are my top three recommendations for countries to visit.
Namibia: Hiking and Surreal Landscapes
My most recent trip to Africa took me to the out-of-this-world landscapes of Namibia. It was surreal–one moment you’d be in the sparse desert, and the next you would see the ocean on the horizon. I would definitely say to go with a guided tour, since transportation and logistics can be extremely challenging. Here are my must-sees:
- Windhoek—When you land in Windhoek, take some time to see the city. Check out the local museums and the German-inspired architecture!
- Damara Living Museum—Experience Namibian culture firsthand at the Damara Living Museum. My visit was both informative and gratifying!
- Deadvlei—If you fly all the way to Namibia, you simply have to visit Deadvlei. This site is the perfect place for photos. Keep in mind you’ll have to conquer some brutal hikes to get those picturesque views!
- Etosha National Park—Don’t miss the chance to visit Etosha National Park, home to a diverse array of wildlife, including elephants, lions, and rhinos.
South Africa: A Storied History
I’ve been to South Africa several times over the past few years, and I’d say this country should secure a spot on your bucket list. Like Namibia, I recommend solo travelers go with a guided tour and get access to experiences the average tourist won’t have. Being part of a group is also good for safety! I suggest tours with these stops:
- Cape Town—See the iconic Table Mountain, take in stunning ocean views, and try some delicious cuisine in South Africa!
- Johannesburg—I recently did a tour of Johannesburg on a 24-hour layover in the city, and I loved the opportunity to see some of the area’s most renowned museums and historic sites.
- Kruger National Park—This national park is a classic safari destination. I spotted the Big 5 (lion, rhino, elephant, buffalo, and leopard) before lunch and saw a group of lions wipe out a buffalo!
Tanzania: Remarkable Wildlife
Tanzania is awesome for over 60 travelers looking for an unforgettable safari experience. You can visit some of the continent’s most famous national parks and reserves. Put these landmarks and activities on your itinerary:
- Serengeti National Park—Tanzania is home to some of the most incredible wildlife I’ve ever seen, and there’s no better place to witness it than the Serengeti. Get a glimpse of lions, gazelles, hippos, and even flamingos!
- Mount Kilimanjaro—Marvel at Africa’s tallest mountain! Mount Kilimanjaro is one of the highest peaks in the world and is surrounded by some of the most stunning vistas as well.
- Shopping—You can’t leave your African safari without a souvenir. You’ll see handmade jewelry all over the place, and the price is usually negotiable. Pick up an extra piece for me!
Kenya: An Immersive Culture
Kenya is a must for any solo traveler who’s new to Africa! The people, the scenic beauty, and the wonderful wildlife just can’t be beat. As you plan your safari in Kenya, don’t miss these experiences:
- Maasai Mara National Reserve—There’s no substitute for a visit to the Maasai people! On the reserve, you can visit a traditional village, participate in ceremonies, and get a peak at daily life in Kenya.
- Hot Air Balloon Safari—If you’re feeling adventurous, make sure to go on the hot air balloon safari. This experience allows you to see it all from the sky. I got glimpses of giraffes, hyenas, ostriches, elephants, and so much more!
Zimbabwe & Botswana: Natural Marvels
Botswana and Zimbabwe are just north of South Africa, and these countries offer no shortage of natural marvels! Beyond the abounding wildlife and cultural experiences, you should also take some time to see one of the most famous waterfalls in the world–Victoria Falls. The waterfall is truly awe-inspiring, and adventurous travelers can try rafting or bungee jumping in the area!
