When you think of Northern California, what’s the first image that comes to mind? For most people, it’s likely the majestic Golden Gate Bridge or the glistening bay to the west of San Francisco. Unfortunately, most travelers don’t venture outside the city and miss out on some of the beautiful small towns and nature reserves the region has to offer. I was fortunate enough to visit NorCal with Visit California as my host—so I got to see all the classic stops and hidden gems! As you plan your trip to Northern California, be sure to follow my guide that was safe for the solo female and over 60 traveler.
Spend the Weekend in a Small Town
If you travel just a bit off the beaten path beyond the Golden Gate Bridge, you’ll reach beautiful Tiburon. It’s just minutes from San Francisco, and the drive was shockingly easy! This charming town is the Beverly Hills of the region with its gorgeous views, haute cuisine, and outdoor living culture. Here’s what I recommend for any other boomer travelers in town:
Where to eat:
- Caffe Acri—Caffe Acri is an all-day bakery and bistro, perfect for grabbing a to-go lunch before hopping on the Angel Island ferry.
- Petite Left Bank—Get a bite of French cuisine! Try classics like oysters from the local bay and escargot.
- The Caviar Company—Taste dishes synonymous with luxury, like champagne and caviar, at this Tiburon establishment! During my visit, I watched one man pick up a to-go order for two people— oooh la la.
- Bungalow Kitchen—If you’re in the mood for a vibrant dining experience, try Bungalow Kitchen. Staple dishes include branzino, cavatelli, and New York strip. Pop upstairs for some of the coziest seating you’ll find at a restaurant!
- Salt & Pepper—This downtown restaurant features delicious Americana and international fare—think everything from great breakfasts to burgers and curry.
What to do:
- Hippie Tree—This eucalyptus tree towers over the landscape, and you can take in the sweeping Golden Gate Bridge views from the comfort of a tree swing.
- Saint Hilary’s Open Space Preserve—This one spot provides stunning views of many San Francisco landmarks. Hike up to the preserve for a peek at the Golden Gate Bridge, Angel Island, Alcatraz, and the Marin Headlands.
- Shoreline Park—If weather allows, don’t miss a chance to bike through this gorgeous park.
- Angel Island Ferry—You simply have to visit Angel Island on your trip! The ferry across the bay is third-generation family-owned and is now female operated.
Where to stay:
- Water’s Edge—This is the ideal place to stay to get both marina and Main Street views. Guests enjoy a fireplace, robe, room service, morning coffee, evening wine and cheese, late-night cookies, and of course, exceptional staff.
Hike Through Angel Island
Angel Island State Park is perfect for solo travel! This quaint island in San Francisco Bay offers a mix of scenic vistas and historical exploration. Don’t miss these activities:
- Hiking— Walk the beautiful 5-mile Perimeter Trail and take in views of the entire bay. Be sure to bring your camera! Once you find a comfy spot, sit down for a picnic lunch with a spectacular vista.
- Biking—Rent a bike and pedal around the island for a scenic ride. Keep in mind that bikes may not be available all-year-round.
- Historic Sites—Angel Island is home to several historic sites. Plan a stop at the Immigration Station – Barracks Museum for a quick trip back in time.
Smell the Sea Breeze at Half Moon Bay
Half Moon Bay, nestled along the breathtaking coastline, is yet another NorCal gem that blends natural beauty with small-town charm. Known for its stunning beaches, dramatic cliffs, and lush landscapes, this picturesque town is a haven for over-60 travelers hoping for some peace and quiet. While the views really set Half Moon Bay apart from other towns of its size, it’s also home to other attractions. I recommend the following for food, shopping, and leisure:
Where to eat:
- Sam’s Chowder House—Dine on New England cuisine all the way out West. Make sure to have Sam’s famous lobster rolls!
- Johnny’s—Go back in time with this cute diner with ‘50’s decor.
What to do:
- Historic Main Street—The main thoroughfare is calm and relaxing but also full of local culture. Explore the shops or simply marvel at the architecture.
- Sea Horse Ranch—A guided tour on horseback? Sign me up! Don’t miss the chance to ride a horse on the beach.
- Pumpkin Festival—Try scheduling your stay around the Pumpkin Festival. This October event features sculptures, carving experts, crafts, and festive food and drink.
Where to stay:
- Beach House—You deserve a treat—stay at the Beach House! This oceanfront accommodation boasts a mini-kitchen, fireplace, and spa.
Stay a Few Days in Utopian Mill Valley
Venture into Marin County and spend another few days in vibrant Mill Valley. This charming, almost utopian, town has a thriving arts scene, eclectic architecture, and magnificent scenery. Here’s how to make your visit one to remember:
Where to eat:
- Piazza D’Angelo—Experience Italy from the coast of California. Piazza D’Angela serves pastas, pizzas, and tiramisu made from locally-sourced ingredients.
- Farmshop—Visit Farmshop for an array of cheese, chocolates, wines, and charcuterie.
What to do:
- Muir Woods—This enchanting forest is sure to remind you of nature’s awe-inspiring beauty. The towering Redwood trees are truly something to behold!
- Mount Tamalpais State Park—Hike the sweeping hillsides of this state park. I recommend the 1.3-mile Verna Dunshee Trail. It’s challenging, but the views are well worth it!
- Cheese Trail—If you’re a true foodie, try making some stops along the Cheese Trail! There are several cheesemakers near Mill Valley, all serving uniquely delicious dishes.
- Mill Valley Music Festival—Plan your trip around this annual festival! Look forward to sets from family-friendly acts.
Where to stay:
- Acqua Hotel—The stunning Acqua hotel will wow you with bay views, fireplaces, and a delectable full breakfast with lots of delicious choices.
