Spring is one of the best times to travel (though, if you’re asking me, travel is a year-round affair)! This year, why not visit Africa? Africa is perfect in the spring, as it avoids their blazing-hot summer temperatures. What’s more, visitors to Africa have the chance to experience so many cultural practices and see majestic wildlife. As a Black woman, seeing Africa is especially important to me. Once, I even had a woman in Namibia suggest we could be distant cousins! I was thrilled at her knowledge of our history and possible kinship. If you’re making spring travel plans, be sure to consider these destinations within Africa.

South Africa: Big Cities and Wonderful Wildlife
South Africa is beautiful in the spring! It’s quite accessible for Americans and has both bustling cities and incredible nature preserves. I’d definitely recommend watching a documentary about Nelson Mandela or reading up on the history of South Africa before you visit. Until the early 1990s, racial segregation was enforced in the country, and Mandela’s activism was instrumental in dismantling the unjust system. It’s helpful to have some context before visiting!
Once you’re ready to start planning your trip (or check out guided tours!), consider these must-see South Africa travel destinations:
- Cape Town—Cape Town has got to be one of the prettiest cities I’ve visited! Table Mountain is absolutely iconic, and you should take any chance you get to see the view from up high. Some activities around the mountain are weather dependent, so be flexible with your itinerary if possible.
- Johannesburg—Johannesburg is another fantastic city that lots of South Africa travel packages include. I recently did a tour of Johannesburg on a 24-hour layover in the city, and I loved the opportunity to see some of the area’s most renowned museums and historic sites.
- Pretoria—Just a bit north of Johannesburg, you’ll find the capital city of Pretoria. If you visit in their spring, you might get a glimpse of the stunning jacaranda trees in bloom!
- Kruger National Park—Located on the border with Mozambique, Kruger National Park is one of the largest game reserves in Africa—and it’s a classic safari destination. I spotted the Big 5 (lion, rhino, elephant, buffalo, and leopard) before lunch and saw a group of lions wipe out a buffalo! Our ranger was quite the lion whisperer.

Zimbabwe: Waterfalls and Once-in-a-Lifetime Views
Zimbabwe is just north of South Africa, and this country offers no shortage of natural marvels! Beyond the abounding wildlife and cultural experiences, you should also take some time to see one of the most famous waterfalls in the world–Victoria Falls. The waterfall is truly awe-inspiring, and adventurous travelers can try rafting or bungee jumping in the area! If you don’t want to go alone, I highly encourage booking Collette Travel’s Exploring South Africa, Victoria Falls & Botswana itinerary. It gives you a full day to discover Victoria Falls and watch wildlife interact in their natural habitat.

Namibia: Hiking and Surreal Landscapes
Namibia is more than just a desert. It’s home to some out-of-this-world landscapes. The experience was surreal–one moment you’d be in the sparse desert, and the next you would see the ocean on the horizon. I would definitely say to go with a guided Namibia tour, since transportation and logistics can be extremely challenging with an expert to help. Here are my must-sees:
- Windhoek—Most Namibia tours will start in the capital city of Windhoek. When you land, be sure to check out the museums and German-inspired architecture.
- Damara Living Museum—I loved my visit to this museum, and I highly encourage fellow over-60 travelers to visit as well. You’ll see Namibian culture firsthand and learn more about day-to-day life in the country.
- Deadvlei—If you fly all the way to Namibia, you simply have to visit Deadvlei. This site is the perfect place for photos. Keep in mind you’ll have to conquer some brutal hikes to get those picturesque views!
- Etosha National Park—Here’s another opportunity to go on a classic African safari! Etosha National Park is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including elephants, lions, and rhinos.

Tanzania: Remarkable Safaris and Wildlife
Tanzania is awesome for over 60 travelers looking for an unforgettable safari experience. In fact, Kenya and Tanzania safaris are high-up on many people’s bucket lists! Add these activities to your itinerary when you visit Tanzania—you’ll have the chance to seek out wildlife (and unforgettable souvenirs!):
- Serengeti National Park—There’s no better place to see wildlife than the Serengeti! If you go on a safari or game drive, you might see lions, gazelles, hippos, and even flamingos.
- Mount Kilimanjaro—Marvel at Africa’s tallest mountain! Mount Kilimanjaro is one of the highest peaks in the world and is surrounded by some of the most stunning vistas as well.
- Shopping—Of course, I always like to do some shopping on my solo travels! And you simply can’t leave Africa without a souvenir! You’ll see handmade jewelry all over the place, and the price is usually negotiable. Pick up an extra piece for me!

Kenya: An Immersive Culture
Kenya is a must for any solo traveler who’s new to Africa! The people, the scenic beauty, and the wonderful wildlife just can’t be beat. As you plan your safari in Kenya, don’t miss these experiences:
- Maasai Mara National Reserve—The Maasai people are incredible! On the reserve, you can visit a traditional village, participate in ceremonies, and get a peak at daily life in Kenya.
- Hot Air Balloon Safari—If you’re feeling adventurous, make sure to go on the hot air balloon safari. This experience allows you to see it all from the sky. I got glimpses of giraffes, hyenas, ostriches, elephants, and so much more!
