Traveling solo is one of the most empowering experiences you can have. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of taking several solo trips all over the USA, and I’ve learned that this country has so much to offer. As a solo woman and seasoned over-60 traveler, I understand the safety concerns that other women have with traveling alone, but I’ve been to so many places where I felt safe AND enjoyed myself all the while! Here are some of my favorite US destinations for solo female travelers.
1. Minneapolis
Minneapolis is a gem for solo female travelers who want both nature and culture. The city has some incredible attractions, including a sculpture garden, beautiful parks, museums, and, of course, the Mall of America. If the mall isn’t quite your speed, be sure to check out all the Prince-themed landmarks around the city. I loved seeing pieces of music history with my daughter! Don’t forget to travel a bit outside the city limits—Minnesota has some stunning scenery that will show you why it’s lovingly called the Land of 10,000 Lakes. No matter where you go, there’s a generally friendly vibe, and I always felt safe.

2. Pensacola
If a laid-back beach getaway is what you’re after, Pensacola, Florida is a fantastic choice. Its white sandy beaches are perfect for unwinding with a book or soaking up the sun in peace. Pensacola also has a charming historic downtown filled with boutiques, restaurants, and live music. I personally loved the Pensacola Museum of History’s eclectic exhibits and installations. Be sure to grab some photos on top of the Pensacola Lighthouse before you head back home!

3. Maine
I can’t choose just one town in Maine, so I recommend seeing as much of the state as possible. This northerly region is one of the best trips for solo female travelers thanks to its quaint coastal towns, slow pace, and delicious food. Imagine yourself taking in waterfront views while sampling lobster or sailing along the Atlantic to see the iconic lighthouses. Definitely add the towns of Kennebunkport and Ogunquit to your itinerary!

4. Northern California
I can’t recommend this magical area enough to my fellow solo female travelers! Northern California has some marvelous landscapes, whether you make your home base San Francisco or one of the beautiful surrounding small towns. I loved staying in Tiburon, just north of San Fran, and using it as a jumping off point to Angel Island, Half Moon Bay, and Muir Woods. You simply have to see the towering Redwood trees at least once in your life. Even when I was alone in nature, there wasn’t a moment I felt unsafe!

5. Williamsburg
Williamsburg, Virginia is perfect for solo women hoping to see something a bit different. Its historical center, Colonial Williamsburg, is particularly exciting for history buffs. The town does an excellent job of celebrating Black history through art exhibits and theater performances. Beyond history, Williamsburg has beautiful gardens, scenic bike paths, and top-tier restaurants. Toward the end of my trip, I was even able to indulge in a relaxing spa session! From relaxation to art to history, you’ll find something to love in this Virginia gem.

6. Chicago
This magnificent city should definitely be on your list as a solo traveler. Growing up just 80 miles away, I’ve traveled to Chicago countless times over the years. While this city sometimes gets a reputation for being unsafe, if you keep your wits about you and take common-sense precautions, you shouldn’t have too many safety concerns. The city is full of world-class museums like the Art Institute of Chicago, along with iconic architecture and stunning lakefront views. You might even consider visiting on St. Patrick’s Day to get in on the festivities! No matter the time of year you visit, be sure to spend some time shopping along the Magnificent Mile, climbing up the Willis Tower, and checking out the Lincoln Park Zoo.

7. Alaska
Trade in the windy streets of Chicago for the sub-zero temperatures of Alaska. A visit to this state will truly be unforgettable, whether you go with family or make the trip alone. I especially loved taking a plane ride over Denali National Park and staying up waiting for the northern lights to show. Beyond that, you could also find yourself on a cruise, petting some reindeer, or meeting some friendly sled dogs. And, of course, the Alaskan scenery is unmatched!

8. Amelia Island
You just can’t go wrong with a solo trip to Florida! If Pensacola isn’t quite calling your name, try beautiful Amelia Island for size. This charming destination is perfect if you’re looking for relaxation and some small-town hospitality. Known for miles of pristine beaches, you could spend mornings collecting shells and pass the afternoon in the water. I highly recommend spending some time exploring the boutiques downtown on Fernandina Beach’s Main Street.

9. Los Angeles
Get back to the hustle and bustle of the city with a trip to Los Angeles! This star-studded city may seem sprawling, but it’s full of treasures for solo women and over-60 travelers alike. You can explore at your own pace, from hiking in Griffith Park to strolling Venice Beach. LA’s museums, like The Getty or LACMA, are also the perfect addition to any itinerary. I truly love Los Angeles, and I never miss a chance to visit this world-class city. Make sure to stop by some of the many amazing Black-owned businesses in town before catching a flight back home!

10. Asheville
Asheville, North Carolina is a favorite among solo female travelers for good reasons! It’s welcoming, artsy vibe is ideal for anyone who wants to enjoy both nature and unique attractions. While I was glamping in Asheville, I had all kinds of activities on my itinerary—a city comedy tour, archery at the Biltmore, and guided foraging, just to name a few. Plus, you can take a scenic drive through the Blue Ridge Mountains and find some of the area’s awe-inspiring waterfalls.
