If cold temperatures are getting you down, why not start planning spring travel? While I love traveling in the colder months, there’s nothing like seeing the world when the seasons change. One of my favorite spring travel destinations are the iconic cherry blossoms. A few places might come to mind when you picture these beautiful trees, but you’ll find several destinations across the world that can give you a front row seat to this spring staple. Here are my top 5 places to see the cherry blossoms this spring!
1. Japan
If seeing the cherry blossoms is on your bucket list, you have to visit Japan! This country is famous for these light pink blooms, called sakura, visible in March and April depending on the region you visit. In fact, cherry blossom viewing has become a staple of Japanese culture, and many guided tours will take you to some of the best viewing spots. Don’t miss the blossoms in these locales:
- Tokyo—Enjoy the iconic blooms at Ueno Park, Shinjuku Gyoen, and along the Meguro River.
- Kyoto—The Philosopher’s Path and Maruyama Park are the perfect, serene backdrop for cherry blossom viewing.
- Mount Yoshino—Renowned for its thousands of cherry trees, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a bucket-list destination for sakura lovers.

2. Washington, DC
You can enjoy the beauty of the cherry blossoms from right here in the U.S.A.! The nation’s capital is famous for its stunning cherry blossoms, gifted by Japan in 1912. Each year, Washington, DC holds the National Cherry Blossom Festival, where attendees enjoy parades, cultural events, and fireworks. Experience the spring blooms at these locations:
- Tidal Basin—Stroll around this picturesque spot to see the blossoms reflected in the water, with the famous Jefferson Memorial as a backdrop.
- National Mall—This iconic spot is beautiful all year, but late March and early April are especially stunning. You can see the lovely cherry blossoms while exploring the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial.

3. New York City
New York City is another place Americans see the cherry blossoms without a passport. The Big Apple features several spots to take in the cherry blossoms in April, including:
- Brooklyn Botanic Garden—This wonderful garden is perfect for a serene afternoon! During the spring season, check out the Cherry Esplanade and the annual Sakura Matsuri festival.
- Central Park—Central Park is instantly recognizable, but did you know cherry blossoms make an appearance in the spring? Stroll through this expansive park and enjoy the blooms.
- Roosevelt Island—Roosevelt Island isn’t necessarily known for its cherry trees, but that doesn’t mean the views aren’t fantastic!

4. Paris, France
The City of Light becomes even more romantic in the spring with cherry blossoms scattered across its parks and streets. Here are some of the best spots:
- Jardin des Plantes—This historic botanical garden is a serene location to enjoy the blossoms.
- Eiffel Tower Gardens—Cherry trees in bloom create a postcard-perfect scene with the iconic tower as the backdrop.
- Square Jean XXIII—Located near Notre-Dame Cathedral, this square offers an enchanting blend of architecture and nature. Since the cathedral burned a few years ago, this park is mostly used for construction. However, you still might be able to grab a glimpse of the blossoms!

5. Stockholm, Sweden
Sweden’s capital might not be the first place that comes to mind for cherry blossoms, but it offers a stunning display in spring. Explore the King’s Garden, a centrally-located park with plenty of cherry blossoms in late April. At the height of the season, you can see over 60 blooming trees lining the walkways. If you plan your trip right, you might even get to experience local events and spring celebrations.

Where Will You See the Cherry Blossoms This Year?
Everyone should see the spring cherry blossoms at least once in their life. I’ve had the privilege to see Japan and Washington, DC in the spring, but these are far from the only destinations where you can enjoy the spring blooms. So, are you planning international travel this spring, or sticking to a no-passport-necessary destination? Let me know where you’re going on Instagram!
